So what is DNS?

A DNS name server is a server that stores the DNS records for a domain name, such as address (A or AAAA) records, name server (NS) records, and mail exchanger (MX) records. A DNS name server responds with answers to queries against its database.

When you purchase a domain name and wish to use it for your showing your web site or sending email, you will need to have DNS records set up. The records tell the server what you want your domain to do. Without them, your domain will not work.
